Allegations of Genocide Against Israel: Reflections on the Philosophy of Science
- Speaker: Verena Buser
- Date: 25.08.2026
- Time: 19Uhr
- Room: ZEU/114/H
Dr. Verena Buser’s lecture focuses on epistemological considerations regarding the accusation of genocide against the State of Israel. It examines which actors make this accusation, what evidence they rely on, and how they theoretically justify it. The aim of the lecture is to critically examine a narrow discourse that claims there is a (scientific) consensus regarding the genocide allegation and to expose the underlying epistemological and methodological assumptions.
Theory and Practice
We want to motivate students to participate in sociopolitical life—both theoretically and practically—and to play an active role. They should develop the necessary sensitivity to critically examine prevailing social hierarchies and to contribute meaningfully to social debates. To this end, it is essential to clarify the social meaning of the terms that have always been present and used in such debates. Where do the terms used to conceptualize current social events originate historically? Do these terms still accurately capture the event in question, and if not, what has changed? Only by clarifying the presupposed terms intended to explain social events can those events be truly understood.
