Semester Fee
There are no general tuition fees in Saxony. However, studying is not free. A semester fee of currently 361.00 euros per semester (starting in the 2026/27 winter semester) must be paid each semester to register for the upcoming semester. The student council’s share of this fee amounts to approximately 3.9%.
On this page, we’d like to show you what the semester fee is used for and how you can have a say in how these funds are allocated. You can find all the information you need about re-registration directly on the TU Dresden website.
Breakdown of the Semester Fee
There’s no question about it: The semester fee is a significant amount. Not everyone can afford to pay this amount twice a year on top of the other financial burdens of college especially if there are additional financial pressures or if you’re just going through a tough time in general. That’s exactly why the Student Council offers various support and counseling services. We won’t leave you alone, especially in an emergency! You can find detailed information and the relevant contact details here. Information on hardship cases for acute emergencies can be found below.
Deutschlandsemesterticket
The solidarity-funded semester ticket has been finalized with the StuRa. It allows you to travel throughout Germany. If you’re away from campus for study-related reasons, you can apply for a refund of the portion.
You can find more information about the ticket, bringing your bike, and the coverage area here.
Are you confused about the ticket? Do you have ideas about what services are missing from the semester ticket? Then the Mobility Unit is the right place for you!
Studentenwerk Fee
According to § 2 Abs. 2 of the Dresden Studentenwerk’s Fee Regulations, the Studentenwerk fee is earmarked for university dining services and social and cultural support.
Specifically, this means that, for example, the affordable meal prices in the cafeteria are cross-subsidized by all students. The Psychosocial Counseling Center also benefits from your fee.
The Dresden Studentenwerk also provides information about the Studentenwerk fee on its own website.
Would you like the Studentenwerk to expand its services, or are you dissatisfied with the dining halls? The Social Affairs Unit and the student members on the Administrative Board are here to help!
Student Council Fee
Of your semester fees, approximately €1.30 goes to your faculty student council and €12.70 to the StuRa. We use these funds, for example, to support student projects, provide informational materials on important topics such as exam review and retakes, and generally fund our work.
Do you have a great project idea but lack the funds? Then contact the Finance and Project Funding Unit for advice on funding options for your project!
Mobibike
In addition to your semester ticket, you can use the DVB’s yellow rental bikes for 30 minutes per rental and the cargo bikes for 60 minutes per rental - free of charge. The rate for longer use is also reduced.
The terms for the rental bikes apply not only in Dresden but in almost all other German cities with a nextbike system.
You can find detailed information about using MOBIbike here.
Hardship Case Application
Students facing particularly severe social and economic hardship may, upon application, be recognized as hardship cases and receive a refund of part of their semester fee in the form of financial assistance.
Do you have questions about hardship cases? Please contact the Social Affairs Unit.
